WAR SECURITY NETS ROBBERY SUSPECT

Airport security measures at a Hampton Roads airport imposed because of the Persian Gulf war helped capture a suspect in eight of the dozens of armed robberies that have alarmed the Baltimore area.

Tony Bedford, 19, was arrested Saturday at the Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport in Newport News after he tried to buy a one-way ticket to Philadelphia, police said Sunday.

Security requires anyone buying a one-way ticket provide a picture identification card. Arresting officer Rocky Downey of the airport police said Bedford, also known as Sadiyq Abdullah Muhammed, had none.

"He had $3,555 in fifties and hundreds in his briefcase with no job and no ID," said Downey.
