Carolyn Halsey said she was asleep in a second-floor bedroom shortly before 9 a.m. when "I felt something burning on my back." When she looked over, she saw flames.
She ran downstairs and discovered her mother, her 2-year-old boy and a friend watching TV, unaware of the fire.
The four escaped, apparently without serious injury.
While firefighters watered down a smoldering pile of furniture and ashes outside the apartment, medics treated Halsey's mother, Margaret, for smoke inhalation. She later was taken to a hospital.
The fire gutted the bedroom, but District Fire Chief Garry Basham said damage from the flames was limited to the second floor.
The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.
