BLUE RIDGE STUDY PANEL CREATED

The General Assembly has passed a joint resolution creating a study commission to propose ways to stimulate economic development in the Blue Ridge region.

The measure added six counties - Wythe, Bland, Highland, Augusta, Nelson and Appomattox - to the 14 cities and nine counties covered by the study. The region stretches from Amherst to Pulaski County.

The 23-member panel is to consider partnership efforts by the state, colleges and private industry, expansion and diversification of existing companies, collection and analysis of regional data, tourism marketing strategies and ways to enhance education and job training. The legislation provides $20,000 for the study.

Steve McGraw, region president, said he's "delighted that the state has recognized the region as an economically viable area." McGraw, a real estate agent, is chairman of Roanoke County Board of Supervisors.

McGraw said he hopes the commission will identify specific needs that can be supported by funds to be requested from the legislature next year.

The region is not economically depressed but a promising future is not assured without some help, according to the joint resolution.
