MORE BANKS RAISING FEES FOR ATM USE

Nearly twice as many banks are charging customers for use of automatic teller machines as were doing so four years ago and the fees have increased sharply, a consumer advocacy group said Monday.

Seventy-eight percent of banks surveyed last year charged for use of the machines, known as ATMs, according to the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, founded by Ralph Nader.

The group said the average fee to use a machine owned by the bank rose to 65 cents from 26 cents. Average fees to use a machine not owned by the cardholder's bank rose to 84 cents from 65 cents.

The group surveyed 168 banks and savings institutions in nine states and the District of Columbia.
