"Pretty Woman" was named in two film categories as best comedy and best motion picture, and Roberts was named favorite motion picture actress and all-around entertainer in the 17th-annual awards. The awards are chosen by a poll of TV and movie fans.
Cosby, who won favorite male television performer and best all-around male entertainer, didn't attend the ceremonies at Paramount Studios but sent a taped message from a Las Vegas stage.
"First of all, I want to dedicate this to all the troops," Cosby said. "And this is a hope dedication for peace all around."
The long-running Boston barroom comedy "Cheers" unseated six-time winner "The Cosby Show" as the best comedy series. "Cheers" manager Kirstie Alley picked up her first trophy for favorite female performer.
"I have a crystal ball collection and "[the trophy] will go among those," she told reporters back stage.
The comedy show "In Living Color" and the cartoon "The Simpsons" shared the trophy for favorite new television comedy series.
"L.A. Law" picked up its fifth straight award for best drama while "Equal Justice" won for best new dramatic show.
Burt Reynolds - host of the awards telecast - won the award for for male performer in a new TV series, "Evening Shade."
Carol Burnett won for best female performer in a new TV series.
"Ghost" was chosen best dramatic film.
Mel Gibson was picked as best actor in movies.
In the music categories, rappers M.C. Hammer won best male performer. "Ice, Ice Baby" won best new song.
Pop diva Paula Abdul won the best female performer award.
The two-hour CBS telecast from Paramount Studios in Hollywood was in some ways a tribute to Reynolds, who holds eight People's Choice trophies in the best motion picture actor and favorite all-around male entertainer categories.
He was named favorite motion picture actor five times and all-around male entertainer three times.
Gary Smith, executive director of the show, called Reynolds "a terrific person with a fresh, spontaneous sense of humor."
"Burt's thank-you speeches have always been a highlight of our awards shows," Smith said. "He's a genuinely funny man who can relate equally well to his fans and to other celebrities. He's a man's man and a woman's man."
