The specifications required contractors to submit a base bid for doing the repairs while the bridge was closed. They also could submit an alternative bid for repairing the structure while it remained open to traffic.
The bids were opened Monday night and City Council had hoped to award a contract so repairs could begin soon. But William Clark, city public works director, said a decision will be delayed a week until city officials get a clarification by Lanford Brothers, a Roanoke contractor that submitted the apparent low bid.
City officials said the bridge needs to be repaired immediately because an inspection showed that the concrete has deteriorated seriously.
