7 SEEK SCHOOL BOARD SEATS

Harry Yates Jr., a retired physician, is the latest applicant for the Roanoke School Board, making seven candidates for the three seats with terms beginning July 1.

Yates, 64, is a former chief of medicine and staff at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

He is a Roanoke native who attended the old Jefferson High School. He earned his bachelor and medical degrees at the University of Virginia.

Monday was the deadline for applicants for the seats held by James Turner Jr., Marilyn Curtis and Velma Seif. All three incumbents have applied for new terms.

Turner, first appointed in 1985, is seeking his third term. He has been chairman three years. Curtis and Seif, who were appointed in 1988, are seeking their second terms.

The other applicants are Martha O'Neil, executive director of the YWCA of the Roanoke Valley; E.H. Cassell Jr., vice president at Sovran Bank; and Garry Fleming, an associate professor of economics at Roanoke College. Fleming was a finalist two years ago.

Under the selection procedure, council announces pending vacancies and invites applications. It publicly interviews up to three applicants for each seat.
