PROSECUTOR: HUGHES NOT OFFERED DEAL

Commonwealth's Attorney Robert Horan said Monday that he has not offered any deal to Caleb Hughes, who was convicted of abducting 5-year-old Melissa Brannen in 1989.

The report of a possible offer to Hughes, a former resident of Christiansburg and Blacksburg, was a hypothetical situation posed by a Washington Post reporter, the prosecutor said in a television interview. He said his remarks were taken out of context.

Horan was quoted over the weekend as saying he would consider an agreement over possible future charges if Hughes revealed the child's whereabouts.

The prosecutor added that his office agreed with the recommendation the jury returned against Hughes that he receive a 50-year prison sentence. - Associated Press
