WHILE PRAISING BUSH, REMEMBER REAGAN

WE SHOULD all be grateful and proud that our president with his decisiveness and persistence, our troops with their loyalty, bravery and skills, and our allies with their steadfastness destroyed the vaunted Iraqi military in 100 hours. As a doughboy in Patton's Third Army during World War II, I am amazed at the accomplishment.

Without taking any of the accolades from President Bush et al., we should recall that it was Ronald Reagan who insisted on the rebuilding of our military during his terms as president - especially, defensive weapons such as the Patriot. With the military as it was when President Reagan took office, we probably would not have won in 100 years, if at all. CLAUDE E. FARRAR ROANOKE
