Harry Wade Smith, age 76, of 1214 Ashland Avenue, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 12, 1991, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Roanoke on September 17, 1914, a son of the late Wade Hampton Smith and Minnie Belle Hatten Smith. He moved to Bedford at an early age and was graduated from Bedford High School. While serving in the U.S. Army as an artillery gunner during World War II, he received several campaign ribbons including the Purple Heart for injuries received. He was a retired employee of Piedmont Label Company with 43 years of service; and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Lynchburg Elks Lodge No. 321, and Peaks of Otter Post #2157 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a loving husband and faithful father and friend. He was preceded in death by his wife, Polly Daniel Smith, on June 12, 1990. He is survived by a daughter, Barbara S. Garrett of Chester, New York; two sons, Harry A. Smith of Botetourt County and James P. Smith of Bedford; a brother, Hunter A. Smith of Lynchburg; also six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Greenwood Cemetery Thursday, March 14, 1991, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Louis E. Carson and Dr. Carl H. Douglass Jr. officiating. Memorials may be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church Building Fund. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home.
