MEETING CALLED IN STRIKE AT BRUNSWICK

A federal mediator has called for a meeting Thursday afternoon in Marion of the striking Carpenters Union and Brunswick Corp. About 800 union employees have been on strike at the defense products plant since March 2.

"We've got to start someplace to see about putting the pieces back together," said Lonnie Stokes, a mediator based in Knoxville, Tenn. The company and the union bargained for more than six weeks before the strike began over contract renewal issues of pay, seniority and subcontracting.
