U.S., ALBANIA TO REOPEN DIPLOMATIC TIES

The United States and hard-line communist Albania announced Tuesday that they will restore diplomatic ties.

The establishment of relations would enable the Bush administration to support "democratic reform in that country and to encourage Albania to play a constructive role in Europe," said White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater.

Albania has had no relations with the United States since it was invaded by Fascist Italy in 1939. - Associated Press
