IN SPORTS-BASKETBALL

Randy Ayers, who in his second year at Ohio State led the Buckeyes to a share of the Big Ten Conference championship, was voted coach of the year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Ayers also was honored by his peers when they chose him as the conference's coach of the year.

Buckeyes sophomore Jim Jackson was picked by the coaches as the player of the year, and Damon Bailey of Indiana was voted freshman of the year.

\ Bridgewater College's Melody Derrow, a senior from Broadway, Va., was selected to the GTE Academic All-America first team for women's college basketball in the college division. She has a 3.70 grade-point average in business administration.
