ROANOKE WOMAN FALLS ON BOTTLES, CUTS NECK, DIES

A 45-year-old Roanoke woman died Monday afternoon after falling down some stairs and cutting her neck on glass bottles she was carrying home in a grocery bag.

A spokesman for the Roanoke Police Department said Joy Larue Davis of the 500 block of Church Avenue Southwest was pronounced dead at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after the 4:11 p.m. accident.

Davis was walking up the front steps of an apartment house when she apparently lost balance, fell back onto the sidewalk and landed on the bottles, the police spokesman said.

Wanda Reed, manager of Roanoke Emergency Medical Services, said witnesses told rescue workers that Davis had just gotten out of a cab and was carrying groceries when she stumbled on the steps.
