WILDER GIVING EPA LIST OF 26 POLLUTION AREAS

Gov. Douglas Wilder plans to send to the Environmental Protection Agency a list of 26 localities where standards for ozone pollution are violated, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Tuesday.

By Friday, states must recommend to EPA officials which localities should be designated "non-attainment areas."

In those localities, depending on the level of pollution, the act requires specific actions to reduce ozone, a lung irritant and the main ingredient in smog. Among those actions are vehicle emission inspections, special gas pump equipment and limits on industry.

The localities on Wilder's list are in Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads and the Richmond area. - Associated Press
