The Chuck Davis African-American Dance Ensemble will be at Hollins College Monday for a morning class in movement and an evening concert.
The movement session will be in the school gymnasium at 10 a.m. and is open to the public at no charge. No experience is necessary.
The concert will be at 8:15 p.m. in the Hollins Theatre. The charge for admission will be $5 for the general public and $3 for senior citizens, students and children. A reception will follow in the Green Drawing Room of Main Building.
The Chuck Davis African-American Dance Ensemble was founded in 1968and is regarded as one of the premier groups of its kind in this country.
Youth auditions
> Auditions for Mill Mountain's 1991-92 Youth ensemble and for parts in the theater's two 1991 summer productions are set for Friday and Tuesday respectively.
The Youth Ensemble is for students in grades 9-12. The program concentrates on rehearsal and performance techniques, with teaching by theater professionals in an ensemble format, and culminates in a production in Theatre B.
Auditions will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in Rehearsal Hall A at the theater, which is in Center in the Square. A one-minute memorized monologue is required for the audition.
Tuesday's auditions will be for acting, singing and dancing parts in "Me and My Girl" (running June 28-July 31) and "Tomfoolery" (Aug. 2-25). Those trying out should be prepared to sing one song in the 1930s-'40s musical comedy style and one in a contemporary comic style. They also should prepare at least one comic monologue and one in a contrasting style.

Music encounter
The Contemporary Art Group's 20th Century Music Encounter Series will continue on March 21 with a program by Byron Petty and Shuko Watanabe.
Petty, a composer and performer, will speak on "Historical Highlights in the Development of Music in This Century." Watanabe's topic will be "Toward an International Approach to Composition." She is a pianist and a member of the music faculty at Hollins College.
Their program will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the second-floor gallery of the Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts. It will include recorded samplings of the work of 20th century composers, including Pulitzer Prize winner Ellen Zwilich.
