35 MILLION AMERICANS DISABLED, REPORT SAYS

Thirty-five million Americans suffer from physical or mental disabilities that limit their activities, a special committee of the Institute of Medicine reported Wednesday.

The cost to the nation is more than $170 billion a year for medical treatment, income support to replace lost earnings and rehabilitation services, the committee estimated.

"Disability is an issue that affects every individual, community, neighborhood, and family in the United States," said the 23-member group, headed by Alvin Tarlov of the New England Medical Center and the Harvard School of Public Health.

Tarlov said the report did not estimate how much disability is preventable.
