PARENT SEMINAR DAY IN FLOYD

The second annual Parent Seminar Day, sponsored by the Floyd County Multidisciplinary Team on child abuse and neglect, will be held Saturday, March 23 beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m.

The theme of the seminar is "Healthy Families in a Changing World." There will be exhibits, informational booths, free child care, workshops, lunch and an Easter Egg Hunt.

A keynote address by Marla Coleman of the state education department and supervisor of the Youth Risk Program will be given at 9 a.m. Coleman will discuss assertive parenting.

Several workshops will be presented. Judy Casteele of the Women's Resource Center will discuss family violence. Vicki Collins and Susan Slade of Mental Health Services will discuss "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen." Doug Dobbs of Prevention Services will present "Substance Abuse in the Family." Pastor Dick Giessler will talk about negotiation. Ross Greene of Virginia Tech will talk about parents and children.

Marsha Hubbard, from the state education department, will present "Developing Responsibility in Children." Dr. Winsdon Pound of St. Albans Hospital will talk about self-esteem in children. And Robert Sisk of court services will discuss what to do when your child gets into trouble.

Pre-registration is encouraged, but registration may be done the day of the seminar. Forms are available at all Floyd County schools, the Jessie Peterman Library, Community Action, the Department of Social Services, the health department and several local stores in Floyd.
