HOUSE OKS MORE BENEFITS

The House voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to shower soldiers and veterans of the Persian Gulf War and other conflicts with $1.1 billion worth of expanded education, death and other benefits.

Ignoring opposition from President Bush, lawmakers approved the five-year package 398-25. Opponents complained that the measure shattered spending limits enacted in last year's budget agreement.

The legislation would increase pay for many soldiers and boost education and other benefits for veterans. It would also protect many reservists who are parents from being called to active duty.

Across the Capitol, Senate leaders from both parties and the Bush administration said they had worked out a compromise on a less ambitious, $500 million bill.
