BIG ISLAND PLANT TO CLOSE FOR 2 WEEKS

Georgia Pacific Corp. said Wednesday it will halt production for two weeks beginning Tuesday at its Big Island plant, which makes paperboard material used in corrugated boxes.

The plant's general manager, Harmon Beauchamp, blamed an overstocked inventory caused by the downturn in the economy. "We can't sell as much as we make," he said.

The shutdown will idle some of Georgia Pacific's 320 employees. Salaried employees may opt to take their vacations during the two weeks.

Of some 240 hourly employees, only 75 will work next week. The following week, no hourly employees will work, Beauchamp said. The plant is expected to resume production on April 2. - Staff report
