THALHIMERS TO CLOSE TWO STORES, OPEN TWO

Thalhimers, the Richmond-based department store chain operating stores in Roanoke and Lynchburg, announced plans Wednesday to close two existing stores and open two new ones. It is the first such move since the 26-store chain was bought late last year by the May Department Stores Co. of St. Louis.

The company said it will close by May a store at Walnut Mall in Petersburg and by July a store at Richmond's Azalea Mall. It will open in the fall of 1992 a 110,000-square-foot store at Virginia Center Commons Mall in suburban Richmond and in November a 104,000-square-foot store in suburban Raleigh, N.C. - Staff report
