W&L STUNS ROANOKE IN LACROSSE

Washington and Lee scored five unanswered goals midway in the second half to break a 5-5 tie and rolled to a 10-6 men's college lacrosse victory over Roanoke College on Wednesday.

The victory was W&L's first over Roanoke since the 1987 NCAA Tournament semifinals. The Generals hadn't beaten the Maroons in a regular-season match since 1984. It was only Roanoke's second regular-season loss in 36 Old Dominion Athletic Conference games since 1981.

W&L (3-1 overall, 2-1 in the ODAC) took a 3-0 lead in the game's first 3 1/2 minutes on two goals by Jeff Roberts and Derek Hutton's score. Trailing 4-1, the Maroons (0-3, 0-1) rallied to tie the score at 13:23 of the third quarter on Bart Zimmerman's goal.

W&L then broke open the game, scoring five times in 17 minutes. Mike Moseman had two of the goals, and Todd Garliss, Clark Wight and Drew Anton had the others.

Generals goalie Tom Costello held off the Maroons by making seven of his 12 saves in the fourth period.

W&L entered the game ranked 13th in Division III. Roanoke was ranked ninth.
