COUNCIL ELIMINATION WORRIES MANY INDIANS

Virginia Indians are worried that elimination of the state Council of Indians will result in their concerns being ignored.

The council, a casualty of the state's efforts to meet a $2.2 billion shortfall, was eliminated last month by the General Assembly at the urging of Gov. Douglas Wilder.

The state says the responsibilities assigned to the council will be addressed by various agencies and an advisory committee.

"I want people to know that they don't care, and I want people to know that they don't want to deal with the Indians," said G. Anne Richardson, assistant chief of the Rappahannock tribe.

Richardson said the council provided a unified body for the state's 15,000 Indians.
