FRIARS OUST DUKES IN OT

Chris Watts scored nine of his 15 points in the second overtime, including six free throws in the last 16 seconds, giving Providence a 98-93 first-round victory over James Madison in the National Invitation Tournament.

The Dukes' last chance ended when guard Fess Irvin was called for a backcourt violation with 10 seconds left.

The Friars (18-12) played the second overtime without star guard Eric Murdock, who fouled out with 3:19 remaining in the first overtime. He scored 20 points.

James Madison (19-10), was led by Steve Hood with 27 and Kenny Brooks with 23.

Hood was unable to convert one of two free throws and a 20-foot fall-away jumper in the last minute that would have given the Dukes the victory.
