CUMBERLAND ROUTS RYE COVE

John Baker scored 22 points and Cumberland roared to a 49-point halftime lead en route to a 100-63 whipping of Rye Cove in the Group A state basketball tournament quarterfinals Wednesday.

The Dukes (24-2) outscored Rye Cove Cove 49-4 over the final 10:30 of the first half in building a 58-9 halftime advantage.

Cumberland, which also got 20 points from Tyrone Mosby, set state tournament records with 10 3-point field goals and 38 second-quarter points. The Dukes outscored Rye Cove 38-4 in the second period.

Steve Childress and Roderick Trent each scored 12 points and Stacy Morton added 10 for Cumberland, which limited Rye Cove to 10 percent shooting and forced 14 turnovers in the first half.

After taking a 9-5 lead midway through the opening period, Cumberland ran off 17 straight points to take a 26-5 advantage. Rye Cove's Danny Walker hit a pair of free throws before Cumberland went on another 24-0 run for a 50-7 lead.

Walker led Rye Cove (15-12) with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Andy Starnes added 15 points and Jason Bishop 11 for the Eagles.

\ Haysi 87 Central Woodstock 70 Jamie Hackney scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Haysi used a strong second half to defeat Central Woodstock in the quarterfinals fo the Group A state tournament.

The Tigers (22-3) will meet the winner of the Lebanon-Sussex Central game in Friday's second round.

Carlos Gulley and Chris Wood added 20 and 19 points, respectively, for Haysi. Tito Mock had 12 points and 10 assists.

Central Woodstock (22-4) was led by Bill Cooper with 20 points and nine rebounds. Jered Hoover added 13 and Tim Bowers 12 for the Falcons.

Haysi trailed 41-34 at the half but outscored the Falcons 53-29 after intermission. The Falcons suffered eight turnovers in the third period and Haysi tallied seven unanswered points in the final 36 seconds of the period to take a 61-53 advantage.

Central Woodstock could get no closer than five points.
