GOODYEAR TO CUT 1,100 SALARIED JOBS

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., faced with increasingly sluggish sales for tires, said Wednesday that it would eliminate 1,100 salaried jobs over the next 12 to 18 months. The giant tire company also said it would take a $65 million pretax charge against first-quarter earnings for the cost of the work force reduction.

The Akron-based tire maker has eliminated thousands of salaried and hourly positions in the last two years, slashing its work force by about 9 percent in that period.

The cuts announced Wednesday represent about 1 percent of the work force and will bring the total number of workers down to 102,000.

Goodyear said the charge would result in a loss for the first quarter, but the company declined to specify the size of the loss. Goodyear earned $20.9 million in the first quarter of last year.
