BARNARD, DR. J. William

Dr. J. William (Bill) Barnard, age 55, of Roanoke, died in a Salem hospital, Wednesday. He was formerly of Grundy, attended Va. Tech and the University of Va. and received his MD from the Medical College of Virginia. He served in family practice in Grundy before returning to the Medical College of Virginia for his residency and radiology. He served as a captain in the Army in Vietnam and received the Air Medal and the Bronze Star. He served as chief of the Department of Radiology at Lewis Gale Clinic and was a fellow of the American College of Radiology. He served as past chief of staff at Lewis Gale Hospital and past president of Lewis Gale Clinic. He was a member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, Roanoke Academy of Medicine and formerly served on board of directors of the American Cancer Society. Surviving are his wife, Mary Virginia Osborne Barnard of Roanoke; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Jr. and Heather Barnard of Dallas, Texas; Kevin and Christy Barnard of Richmond; two daughters, Brooke and Meg Barnard, both of Roanoke; mother, Lorene Barnard of Grundy; two sisters, Nell McGuire of Grundy; Sue Brown Williamson of Ky.; two brothers, Lawrence Barnard of Deland, Fla.; Curtis Barnard of Tampa, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted at the Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 11:00 a.m., Saturday by Dr. James A. Allison, Jr. and Dr. J. Harris Stephens. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family suggests memorials be made to the Barrows Neurological Institute (Brain Tumor Research), 2910 North 3rd Ave., Phoenix, Ariz. 85013 or the Bradley Free Clinic. Friends may call at Oakey's South Chapel after 9:00 a.m. Friday where the family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday.
