ELEANOR SHEPPARD, FORMER MAYOR, DIES

Eleanor Sheppard, Richmond's first woman mayor and a House of Delegates member for nine years, has died at the age of 83.

Sheppard died Wednesday at her home after a long illness.

A native of Pelham, Ga., she became the first woman elected to Richmond City Council when she was 47. In 1960, she became the city's first female vice mayor and was elected mayor two years later on a 6-3 vote after 25 ballots. She held the post for one two-year term.

She resigned from the council in 1967 and was elected to the House, where she served until 1977.

She is survived by two daughters, two sisters and a brother. Her husband, Thomas E. Sheppard, died in 1987.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ginter Park Baptist Church.
