MAGAZINE SAYS STALEY YEAR'S BEST

University of Virginia women's basketball standout Dawn Staley has been named Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated magazine.

Staley, who led the ACC in in steals (4.2 per game) and assists (6.7 per game), has tallied two triple-doubles and four other double-doubles this season. She also became the Cavaliers' career assist leader when she dished out 10 against North Carolina State on Feb. 23. She had 195 assists on the season.

Staley is one of three current Virginia players to score more than 1,000 points and one of five all-time to score more than 1,500 in a career.

Staley has made 369 career free throws, a school record.

Staley was the only women chosen as ACC Player of the Week three times and was chosen the conference's Player of the Year.

The 5-foot-5 junior averages 13.9 points per game, third on the team. - Staff report
