WIFE SUES DRIVER WHO KILLED HUSBAND

The wife of a Roanoke lawyer killed in an automobile accident has filed a $1.35 million lawsuit against the man convicted of manslaughter in the case.

William L. Martin was killed in March 1989 when a car he was riding in was struck by a car driven by Herman Ray Barber, a counselor for a veterans' treatment center. Barber was convicted of manslaughter in June 1990 and was sentenced to three years in prison.

In a lawsuit filed Thursday in Roanoke Circuit Court, Martin's wife, Garnett, claimed that Barber was speeding and driving drunk at the time of the accident on Ogden Road Southwest.

Barber was released from prison this month, according to the lawsuit.
