SHARIF WINS PAKISTAN ELECTIONS

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Islamic Democratic Alliance swept Thursday's Senate elections, giving him a solid majority in both houses of Parliament.

Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, whose party was badly beaten, accused the government of intimidation and vote-rigging and vowed to boycott the Senate, which is the upper house of Parliament.

With all 46 races decided, the governing coalition won 23 seats and other smaller parties and independents, most aligned with Sharif, captured 14.

Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party won five seats.

Sharif's election victory further strengthens his 4-month-old government, giving him commanding majorities in both chambers and most likely ensuring smooth passage of his economic, political and social programs.
