Second Presbyterian Church continues the celebration of its centennial Sunday as the Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Achtemeier presents the sermon.
Achtemeier, an ordained Presbyterian minister, is adjunct professor of Bible and homiletics at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. Her husband, Dr. Paul J. Achtemeier, is a professor of New Testament there.
Elizabeth Achtemeier has written 14 books, most related to the study and teaching of the Old Testament, which is her specialty. She has lectured and preached throughout the country, including at Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Duke universities.
The service is open to the public and is one in a series of special activities planned for the 100th anniversary of the congregation.
Number of Methodist women ministers up
Four ordained women and a fifth preparing for ordination in the Roanoke District of the United Methodist Church are among 3,187 women now in active ministry in the denomination.
The denomination's press service in Nashville, Tenn., reported that the number of women pastors has increased by about 200 annually over the past four years.
The 13 United Methodist-related theological schools report 1,099 women enrolled in master of divinity programs in 1990, up four from 1989.
