AIR POLLUTION BOARD OKS PERMIT RULES

The State Air Pollution Control Board approved regulations Thursday to require operating permits for thousands of longstanding sources of air pollution in Virginia.

The regulations, approved 4-0, will take effect July 1 and give Virginia an early start on complying with provisions of the new federal Clean Air Act.

The regulations will apply to about 350 major pollution sources and up to 4,000 small sources not covered by the state's 1972 permit requirements for polluters.
