FERGUSON, FAUQUIER DEFEAT JOHN MARSHALL

Marquis Ferguson's free throw with six seconds remaining in overtime Thursday gave Fauquier a 70-69 victory over John Marshall in the opening round of the boys' Group AAA state basketball tournament.

Fauquier (22-5) will play Bayside, a 70-41 winner over Chantilly, in Friday's semifinals.

Down by 16 with 7:49 left in the third quarter, the Falcons went up by five before settling for a tie on Brian Marshall's two free throws with 19 seconds left.

John Marshall (24-3) had a chance to win in regulation, but David Holley missed two free throws with four seconds remaining.

The loss ended John Marshall's 19-game winning streak.

Fauquier, led by 18 points from guard Calvin Yates, went up by a pair twice in overtime, and each time Marshall tied the score. Edmund Sherod's soft baseline jumper with 35 seconds left tied the score at 69.

The Justices came close to forcing a turnover on the inbounds, but were called for a foul with six seconds left, giving a one-and-one opportunity to Ferguson. He made the first, missed the second, and John Marshall's desperation shot at the buzzer missed.

Jason Williford led Marshall with 26 points, 11 rebounds and six steals. Holley added 16 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and three steals.

\ Bayside 70 Chantilly 41 Mario Mullen scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as defending state champs Bayside defeated Chantilly in the opening round of the boys' Group AAA tournament.

The Marlins (23-4) will face Fauquier, a 70-69 victor over John Marshall in overtime, in today's semifinals.

Chantilly kept it close early, trailing 18-13 at the end of the first quarter. Then the bottom fell out. The Chargers (22-7) scored just one point in the second quarter and went to the locker room down, 30-14.

The Marlins shot 63.6 percent from the field in the second half - 51.9 percent for the game - to keep the Chargers at arm's length. Guard Lamont Thomas scored 10 of his 12 points after the break. Ronell Williams scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Bayside.

Chantilly's leading scorer, Shane Clancy, was held to one point, 16 below his average. Center Tim Fudd and guard Darryl Franklin led the Chargers with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
