Neither did the Pulaski County School Board.
Actually, the big and bearded Mr. Marvelous - in civilian clothes rather than wrestling togs - was soft-spoken in supporting the request by the Boys Basketball Boosters Club to stage a fund-raising wrestling event at Pulaski County High School.
So was Ronnie Alexander, the club spokesman, who said the organization has dipped ice cream, held drawings for prizes and staged annual donkey basketball games to raise money for the Cougars basketball team. The money goes toward shoes, trips and other needs.
"They sound like very truthful gentlemen," said Irene Kegley, board chairwoman. "He really is Mr. Marvelous?" Superintendent William Asbury asked, looking up from where he sat at the figure looming over him at Thursday night's board meeting.
The club would get half of the profits from the wrestling event, and all profits from the sale of refreshments. Alexander said the entire amount would go toward the school's basketball program.
Wrestling events of this kind have been held in Floyd, Giles and Wythe counties, and recently at the Pulaski YMCA.
"We've been working on this project for about a year," Alexander said, but the Y staged a wrestling event in Pulaski County first.
Asbury said he saw no conflict with board policy on use of school facilities for the wrestling show. He just wanted to make sure none of the board members had any objections.
None did. - PAUL DELLINGER
