SALEM BANK PLANS BANK OUTSIDE CITY

Salem Bank & Trust said Friday it has asked federal officials for permission to build its first branch outside the Salem city limits - at Oak Grove Plaza on Virginia 419 near the Grandin Road extension.

Bank President Clark Owen Jr. said plans to open a fourth office had been under way for the past three months. The move into Roanoke County was "the natural place to go," he said.

Opened for business in 1978, the Salem bank has $90 million in total assets. Bank executives are planning to build an 1,800-square-foot branch at 2103 Electric Road site once the Office of the Comptroller approves the bank's request.
