BLACKSBURG WOMAN NAMED TO STATE EDUCATION BOARD

A Blacksburg lawyer and women's rights advocate has been named to the state Board of Education.

Darrel Long Tillar, a partner in the law firm of Long, Long and Tillar, was named by Gov. Douglas Wilder for a four-year term, effective Jan. 30.

"I'm flattered, I'm excited and I'm challenged by this," Tillar said Friday.

"Everyone with whom I've spoken has indicated that this is an incredibly important time for education," she said. "There are many creative changes that are being introduced. Because of my belief of how important public education is, I'm pleased to be a part of that innovation and change."

Tillar has a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in education from Virginia Tech and is a 1981 graduate of the law school at the University of Virginia.

She was chairwoman of the Virginia Council on the Status of Women in 1985, has been a board member of Planned Parenthood of Southwest Virginia and co-authored "Sexual Harassment: An Employment Issue," a book written for the College and University Personnel Association.
