DUKE COACH LIKES `PURITY' OF COLLEGE

Mike Krzyzewski had the chance to go pro after taking Duke to its third straight Final Four a year ago, but decided the high-profile, big-money lifestyle of the NBA was not for him.

He's where he wants to be - coaching in the college ranks and again trying to manuever the Blue Devils through the NCAA tournament.

"The pros are a business and it's entertainment," said Krzyzewski, who was wooed by the Boston Celtics. "Money on the table and you do it or you don't do it, that type of thing.

"Coaching in college is more pure for me. It's not a business. It's people working with people. It's an opportunity to coach and watch people develop. I love that. I don't see me changing. It confirmed in my mind what I should be doing and where I should be doing it and that's at Duke."

Duke (27-7) meets Iowa (21-10) in the second round of the Midwest Regional today. In the second game at the Metrodome, Connecticut (19-10) faces Xavier (22-9).

Krzyzewski's record in NCAA play is 22-7.

"Mike has done the job of getting the players he needs to perform in a tough conference at a high level," Iowa coach Tom Davis said. "He's one of the finest coaches in the country, at any level, college or pro."

The Blue Devils routed Northeast Louisiana 102-73 in Thursday's first round. Iowa overcame East Tennessee State's quickness for a 76-73 victory; Connecticut stopped LSU and Shaquille O'Neal 79-62; and Xavier, the 14th seed, surprised No. 3 seed Nebraska 89-84.

The game will feature a meeting of talented centers - Duke's 6-11 Christian Laettner and Iowa's 6-10 Acie Earl.
