OFFICIAL ANTICIPATES DROP IN STATE ROAD FUNDING/

Construction funds for primary, secondary and urban roads will be about 16 percent less than the current year, the Virginia Department of Transportation said.

Secretary of Transportation John Milliken in a letter asked local government officials and General Assembly members to be prepared to recommend which projects can be delayed or deleted from planned road improvements.

Milliken said he will present to the governor later this year a list of projects that cannot be financed out of currently available transportation funds, and some recommendations on how they might be financed.

In addition to the anticipated drop in funds for roads, public transit funds are also to drop 2.8 percent, the department said.
