POLICE PROBE ALLEGED EDUCATION PURCHASE

Gov. Douglas Wilder said Friday he has asked the state police to investigate whether the Department of Education violated state law in making a purchase more than a year ago.

The governor received evidence Wednesday from Joseph Spagnolo, state superintendent of public Instruction, said Laura Dillard, Wilder's press secretary. The purchase took place in November 1989, she said.

Dillard would not give details about the purchase, except to say it was a one-time incident and does not involve a continuing policy in the department.
