MAN, WOMAN DIE IN TRAIN ACCIDENTS

A Roanoke man and a Salem woman were killed in separate train accidents Friday.

Donald Lee Jones, 26, of the 1000 block of Bullitt Avenue, was killed while fishing on a railroad trestle Friday afternoon. Debbie Jean Poff, 33, of Salem, died Friday night after her car was hit at a crossing, officials said.

Roanoke police said Jones and a friend were fishing near the 2200 block of Kenwood Boulevard Southeast about 2:15 p.m. when the companion, whose name was not released, warned Jones that a train was coming. Jones tried to run away along the tracks, but tripped and fell, police said.

Poff was passing through the barriers about 9:20 p.m. at the Union Street railroad crossing in Salem and was struck by an eastbound train. She was alone in the car.

Poff was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she died at about 10:30 p.m., police said.
