VIRGINIA UNION IN REGIONAL FINAL

Walter Hurd scored 23 points and Virginia Union shot 58.3 percent in the opening half Friday night to defeat Morehouse 89-79 in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional.

The Panthers (25-4) will now play South Carolina-Spartanburg in Saturday's championship game. The Rifles (26-2) raced past Johnson C. Smith 99-74 in the nightcap.

Virginia Union fell behind 11-4 early before taking the lead for good at 32-30 on a Hurd steal and basket.

Virginia Union pushed the lead to 72-63 with 7:49 remaining on a Warren Peebles steal and layup.

\ North Alabama 94, Hampton 80: In Troy, Ala., Allen Williams scored 19 points to lead five North Alabama players in double figures as the Lions beat Hampton University in the opening round of the Division II South Region Tournament.

Kenny Brown paced the Pirates with 23 points.
