Dr. Earl W. Thomas, Professor Emeritus at Radford University, age 63, of Christiansburg, died Friday, March 15, 1991, at his home. He was formerly of Section, Alabama. He received his B.S. degree in education and Masters degree in arts from the University of Alabama, and his doctorate degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania. He was retired as a professor of secondary education at Radford University. Dr. Thomas was an author whose works included various books on building writing and reading skills and children's short stories. In addition to his work at Radford University, Dr. Thomas was active in adult literacy programs and the New River Valley Agency on Aging, where he served as a member of the board of directors. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Christiansburg where he served for many years as an adult Sunday School teacher. Dr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Juanita, of Christiansburg; children, Russell S. Thomas of Tampa, Florida and Jonathan Earl Thomas of Christiansburg; daughter-in-law, Carolyn L. Thomas of Tampa, Fla.; two siblings, Mary Ellen Deignan of Atlanta, Georgia and Robert S. Thomas of Birmingham, Alabama. Friends may call at Richardson-Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held at the Section Methodist Church, Section, Alabama, on Tuesday. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made in the name of Dr. Earl W. Thomas to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad.
