BOARDINGHOUSE FIRE INJURES MAN

One man was injured in a Friday night fire at Lilly's Boarding House in downtown Roanoke.

Helen Mende, manager of the house, said 64-year-old Lloyd Scales suffered burns on his face and hands. Scales was living in a room next to one in which the fire began and was injured when he tried to get out of his room.

He was listed in satisfactory condition Saturday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and was expected to be released soon, a spokeswoman said.

Scales was trapped in his room by the fire until he was rescued by Roanoke Fire Department personnel, Mende said.

A Fire Department spokesman would release no details on the 11:45 p.m. blaze, other than to say it was being investigated by the fire marshal's office.

Mende said the 13 residents of the boardinghouse had to be moved to a shelter for the homeless overnight, but that all were back in the building Saturday. No one else was injured and Mende said only one room was seriously damaged.
