GATE CITY HONORS ITS GULF TROOPS

About 2,000 people lined the main street of this small Southwestern Virginia town for a parade honoring their families and neighbors serving in the Persian Gulf region.

Maj. Gen. John G. Castles, adjutant general of the Virginia National Guard, led the paraders - relatives of the men and women serving in the city's three National Guard units - along the 2-mile route.

About 400 area men and women from the Gate City area are serving in the Middle East in the 1033rd Transportation Co. of Gate City, the 1032nd Transportation Co. of Big Stone Gap, and the 1030th Engineering Battalion of Gate City.

All of the marchers wore yellow ribbons and many held photographs of relatives in the Gulf region.
