MARINE DROWNS IN TRAINING AT QUANTICO

Marine 2nd Lt. Anthony L. Marchinda, 24, of Troy, Mich., drowned Saturday while participating in swim-qualification training at Quantico Marine Base, the service said.

A statement from the Marines said Marchinda, who was assigned to Company A of the Basic School, was swimming underwater with other members of his training company in the pool at Ramer Hall shortly before he was spotted lying face down on the bottom of the pool about 10:50 a.m.

He was pulled out of the water by instructors. Medical corpsman administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation there and while being transported to Mary Washington Hospital, according to the Marines.

The Marine statement said Marchinda was listed in critical condition when he arrived at the hospital and was pronounced dead at 1 p.m.

Master Sgt. Marv Price said an autopsy was planned.
