U.S. TEAM ENDS FIVE-MONTH WINLESS STREAK

At Torrance, Calif., the United States ended a five-month, six-game winless streak in international soccer games, beating Canada 2-0 in the North American Nations Cup on goals by Dante Washington of Radford University and Bruce Murray.

The Americans finished the three-team tournament undefeated, having tied Mexico 2-2 Tuesday. However, the Mexicans, who beat Canada 3-0 Thursday, earned the champions trophy on goal differential.

Washington got his second goal of the tournament on a 14th-minute header off a perfect head pass from Alexi Lalas. Canada goalkeeper Paul Dolan scrambled left to cut off Lalas and Washington was open on the right.

Murray, the top scorer in U.S. history, got his 13th career goal on a header off a well-placed corner kick by UCLA's Chris Henderson 20 minutes into the second half.

The United States, 1-2-1 this year, had not won a full international since a 3-2 victory at Poland last Oct. 10. Since then, the Americans played scoreless ties with Trinidad and Tobago and the Soviet Union; lost 1-0 to Portugal, Switzerland and Bermuda; and played the 2-2 tie with Mexico.
