HURD'S 3-POINTER LIFTS VIRGINIA UNION

Walter Hurd scored 28 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:05 left Saturday night, as Virginia Union beat South Carolina-Spartanburg 77-73 to win the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region basketball championship.

S.C.-Spartanburg (26-3) trailed 41-32 at halftime, but rallied and led 70-69 before Hurd's long-range shot put the Panthers (26-4) ahead for good.

Hurd then assisted on a Derek Johnson slam after a turnover and the Panthers were up by four points with 1:22 left.

Hurd, who sank 11 of 15 free throws, also made one free throw with 43 seconds left to help seal the victory.

Reggie Jones added 18 points for the Panthers, and Derrick Johnson had 15 rebounds.

Willie Murdaugh led S.C.-Spartanburg with 22 points, and Ulysses Hackett added 21.
