BIG BUCKS BOUNTIFUL IN CLASSIC

Noel Feather, one of the top trophy hunters in North America, will be featured in the Old Dominion Big Buck Classic Saturday and Sunday at Lakeside Plaza.

Feather is scheduled to present a 2 p.m. clinic each day on "How to Get That Trophy Buck," according to Lawrence Barger, the show promoter and a local hunting agent.

The show will display the largest collection of Boone and Crockett whitetail deer heads in the state, Barger said.

The event also will include an archery contest, a Virginia big buck contest and a turkey calling contest.

The archery tournament will be sponsored by Star City Archery and will offer a first-place prize of a whitetail hunt in Alabama. The entry deadline is 1 p.m. Saturday. Additional information is available from 387-3155.

The big buck contest will judge deer killed during the past hunting season, measuring them under Boone and Crockett standards, Barger said. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded. Entries must be received by 2 p.m. Saturday.

The turkey contest is sponsored by Quaker Boy Callers and competitors must register by 2 p.m. Saturday. A calling clinic will be held by Danny Oakes, the 1990 Virginia champion.

Information on the buck and calling contest is available from Barger at 563-2991.

Barger will present a seminar on "Picking and Planning Your Hunt," and the show's attractions will include noted bluefish angler Capt. Don Kuykendall, a Chesapeake Bay charter boat skipper.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the old Lakeside Kroger building. The admission fee is $5; children under 12 free.
