The 500-mile race was scheduled to resume at 11 a.m. today on lap 48, weather permitting. The National Weather Service forecast called for the rain to end and skies to clear this morning.
Marlin passed pole-sitter Alan Kulwicki on lap nine and had extended his lead to more than 30 car lengths when light rain began to fall at the 1.522-mile oval. The yellow flag came out on lap 41.
The race was red-flagged six laps later.
Ken Schrader was running third when the race was stopped, followed by Ernie Irvan and Mark Martin. Dale Earnhardt was ninth and Rick Mast 17th.
Under NASCAR rules, the cars were lined up single file and in order on pit road after the race was stopped. Before the race resumes today, the only work pit crews can do on the cars is add air to the tires, hook up the oil heaters and change the air cleaners.
\ Junior Johnson, Fred Lorenzen, Cale Yarborough, Buck Baker and 10 or 15 other legends of NASCAR will take to the track again May 19 in a 40-lap old timer's race preceding The Winston at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
\ Kulwicki announced before the event that the Hooters restaurant chain is sponsoring his white Ford Thunderbird for this race. Kulwicki, who has been unable to find a full-time sponsor this year, became the first unsponsored driver to win a pole in the NASCAR Winston Cup series since J.D. McDuffie did it at Dover in 1978.
